Shule Culture

The Ijoba Shule believes in the Sankofa values of ReAfrakanization, Family Development and Nationbuilding. We seek to teach our students, in the words of the late Dr. John Henrik Clarke, “… to be responsible handlers of power.” We work to achieve balance between the personal and the community in an atmosphere of cooperation and collective work. We value the rich cosmopolitan environment that the city and surrounding suburbs provide as well as the unique opportunities and challenges it provides for the education of our students.

Student Recitations

Lift Every Voice and Sing

Lift every voice and sing, till earth and Heaven ring,
Ring with the harmonies of liberty;
Let our rejoicing rise, high as the listening skies,
Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.
Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us,
Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us;
Facing the rising sun of our new day begun,
Let us march on till victory is won.

Stony the road we trod, bitter the chastening rod,
Felt in the days when hope unborn had died;
Yet with a steady beat, have not our weary feet,
Come to the place for which our fathers sighed?
We have come over a way that with tears has been watered,
We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered;

Out from the gloomy past, till now we stand at last
Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast.
God of our weary years,
God of our silent tears,
Thou Who hast brought us thus far on the way;
Thou Who hast by Thy might, led us into the light,
Keep us forever in the path, we pray.
Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee.
Lest our hearts, drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee.
Shadowed beneath Thy hand, may we forever stand,
True to our God, true to our native land.

Pan-Afrakanism or Perish

Excuses

Excuses are the tools of the weak that build monuments to nothingness and those who specialize in them are seldom good for anything else, therefore, there are no excuses.

Golden Rule

I will treat other people the way I want to be treated.

Honor Code

I will not lie, cheat, or steal nor tolerate anyone who does.

Respect

If you can’t say anything nice, then don’t say anything at all.

Shule Motto

It is good to speak to after; after will listen.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to teach students to be responsible handlers of power in service to the Divine, nation, community and family.  We believe that a life is meaningless unless it is lived in service to something greater than oneself, hence one of our school mottos: Not for oneself alone.  There are four (4) major tenets that support this mission, they are:

  1. Character/moral development

  2. A values-based, demanding, but nurturing academic environment

  3. Development of a strong, positive Afrakan identity

  4. Nation-building mindset
